Safaricom has announced a significant upgrade to its internet services for both home and business customers. The revamp introduces higher speeds across existing packages and debuts the ultra-fast Platinum 1000Mbps (1Gbps) plan, aimed at heavy internet users. This development comes as Safaricom strives to meet the growing demand for reliable, high-speed internet, catering to both individual and enterprise needs.
New Internet Speeds for Home and Business Customers
According to the company, these plans are designed to handle the most demanding online activities such as 4K/8K streaming, cloud computing, gaming, and virtual reality applications.
The most notable addition to the lineup is the Platinum 1Gbps (1000Mbps) plan, priced at KES 20,000 per month. This plan targets users who require high bandwidth for intensive online activities like gaming, content creation, and video production.
In line with the growing demand for faster and more reliable internet, Safaricom’s upgrade also includes an improvement across its existing plans.
Below is a comparison of the old and new internet speeds, along with updated pricing:
Plan | Old Speed | New Speed | Price (KES) |
---|---|---|---|
Bronze | 10 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 2,999 |
Silver | 20 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 4,100 |
Gold | 40 Mbps | 80 Mbps | 6,299 |
Diamond | 100 Mbps | 500 Mbps | 12,499 |
Platinum | – | 1000 Mbps | 20,000 |
The upgrades are automatic, meaning current customers will be switched to the new speeds without any additional fees or changes to their existing contracts.
Launch of the Home Fibre Family Share Plan
In addition to increasing speeds, Safaricom introduced the Family Share Plan, an integrated service that combines mobile voice, data, SMS, and home internet. This plan allows families to share one internet connection across multiple devices and services, making it more convenient for households with several users.
With the Family Share Plan, up to five members of a household can share the internet, and customers enjoy the following features based on their plan:
- 15Mbps Plan: Supports up to five concurrent devices, offers 5GB of mobile backup data, and includes 400 minutes of voice calls per month.
- 100Mbps Plan: Supports up to 50 devices, provides 15GB of mobile backup data, and comes with a closed user group voice plan that allows unlimited voice communication for three users every month.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa has highlighted the relevance of the Family Share Plan noting that it is developed to cater to the evolving needs of customers, particularly gamers, content creators, and families that require constant connectivity across multiple platforms.
Why the Upgrade Matters
Although Safaricom remains the market leader in the fiber internet space, the company faces increasing competition from both new and established internet service providers in Kenya. Competitors such as Airtel, Zuku, Jamii Telecom, Liquid Telecom, and disruptors like Starlink, are all pushing for more market share by offering competitive pricing and speeds.
With the digital economy growing at a rapid pace in Kenya, reliable and fast internet has become essential for both households and businesses. Whether it’s for remote work, online education, entertainment, or running business operations, internet users are demanding faster speeds and more stable connections.
This latest upgrade from Safaricom is a response to these demands. The improved plans are particularly beneficial for gamers, content creators, and small businesses that rely on a stable and high-speed connection to operate. The availability of 1000Mbps (1Gbps) speeds also positions Safaricom as the first to offer gigabit internet to the home market, giving it an edge over competitors.
