KNEC Makes It Easier for KCSE Repeaters With New Flexible Retake Exams in July

In a new move, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has introduced a partial Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) retake option starting in July 2025. This development allows candidates to retake specific subjects they failed, revolutionizing the retake process and providing flexibility for students. Below are the key details:

Who Is Eligible?

Repeaters

    • Full Repeaters: Candidates retaking seven or more subjects.
    • Partial Repeaters: Candidates opting to retake fewer than seven subjects. Both categories must provide proof of prior KCSE registration.

    Missed KCSE

Candidates who registered for the KCSE but were unable to sit the exams due to illness, accidents, or emergencies are eligible to apply for the retake.

    Adult Learners

Individuals outside regular schooling, with proof of primary education qualifications, can register for the exams.

      Registration Details

      • Dates: Registration opens on January 27, 2025, and closes on February 21, 2025.
      • Fee: KES 7,200, payable through the e-Citizen platform during registration.
      • Where to Register: Candidates must register through their respective County Directors of Education (CDEs) via the KNEC portal.

      Key Rule

All repeaters and private candidates must register for the July KCSE series. The November series is exclusively for first-time candidates.

      Exam Dates

The retake exams will take place between July 1 and August 1, 2025, covering both theory and practical papers.

Why This Is a Welcome Change

This new policy is particularly beneficial for students who underperformed in specific subjects. Instead of retaking the entire KCSE, they can focus on improving performance in their weaker areas. Additionally, this flexibility reduces financial and time constraints for repeaters, while also accommodating adult learners and those who missed exams due to unforeseen circumstances.

This move aligns with KNEC’s commitment to making education accessible and inclusive, empowering candidates to improve their academic outcomes. For more information, visit the official KNEC website or consult your County Director of Education.
