Qualcomm is shaking things up again — and no, you didn’t miss four generations overnight. The company has officially confirmed its next flagship chipset will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, debuting on September 23, 2025.
Almost a year after unveiling the Snapdragon 8 Elite, Qualcomm is ready to reveal its successor. The name raised eyebrows because many expected “Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.” Instead, Qualcomm says the “Gen 5” branding reflects the fifth generation of its 8-series premium lineup since the naming shift in 2021.
What’s New with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
This isn’t just a name tweak. Qualcomm says the Gen 5 continues its Elite positioning — the top tier of performance processors designed for flagships. Key expected specs include:
- Custom Oryon CPU cores, with the prime core clocked at 4.6 GHz.
- A “for Galaxy” edition tuned up to 4.7 GHz, expected to power Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series.
- A next-gen GPU running at 1.2 GHz,
- The chipset as a whole is rumored to deliver an AnTuTu score between 4.2M–4.4M, a new industry record.
- Built on TSMC’s N3P 3nm process, promising efficiency gains alongside raw power.
Who’s First in Line
Xiaomi has already confirmed its Xiaomi 17 series (including the 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max) will be among the first smartphones powered by the new chip. Samsung is expected to follow with the Galaxy S26 lineup in early 2026.
For Kenyan consumers, this means the next wave of premium devices landing in local markets will likely come with the Elite Gen 5 under the hood, offering faster speeds and better energy efficiency.
The Bigger Picture
Qualcomm’s move isn’t just about speed — it’s about positioning against Apple’s A-series chips and MediaTek’s Dimensity line, both of which have pushed performance and efficiency in the past two years. By anchoring “Elite” as a prestige brand, Qualcomm wants to own the conversation in premium Android hardware.
Expect smoother gaming, faster multitasking, and better battery efficiency, whether you’re using a Xiaomi, Samsung, or other Android flagship.
Official unveiling
The official unveiling happens at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on September 23. Expect more details on benchmarks, AI performance, and rollout partners.
