10 things about Safaricom VybCall to know before you subscribe

Safaricom’s VybCall is officially live, turning the once-boring call waiting moments into short-form video entertainment. Whether you want to show off a trending clip, support a local creator, or just make your friends laugh, VybCall has you covered. But before you jump in, here’s everything you need to know, straight from Safaricom’s updated FAQ.

1. What is VybCall?
VybCall is Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service, letting your callers watch short videos while waiting for you to pick up. It’s the natural evolution of the classic Skiza service, but now with visuals.

2. Who can use it?
Both PrePay and PostPay Safaricom subscribers are eligible. Just make sure you’re in Kenya (not roaming) and that you’re using a primary line on your SIM. Sorry, dual SIM secondary lines won’t work.

3. Which devices are supported?
Your phone has to meet certain requirements: a smartphone with VoLTE enabled, and the latest software updates from the manufacturer supporting VybCall. Not sure if your device is compatible? You can check the supported device list here.

4. How to activate VybCall
Getting started is easy. Dial *860# on your phone or visit vybcall.safaricom.com on your phone. You’ll be browsing videos and setting your preferred clip in no time. Our activation guide has all the steps laid out in a simple, hands-on way.

5. How much does it cost?
VybCall runs at KES 3 per day, automatically renewed. You’ll be charged for each multimedia content upon successful subscription. Make sure you have enough balance or use Okoa Jahazi to avoid failed payments. It’s also worth noting that you cannot pay for VybCall using promotional resources.

6. Free trial for new users
When you first subscribe, Safaricom assigns default video content for free. Once you set your preferred videos, the default clip is removed. It’s a neat way to test the service without spending a shilling.

7. How to stop or change your subscription
Opting out is just as easy as subscribing. Dial *860# and select “opt-out,” or manage your subscription through the VybCall platform.

8. Privacy matters
Safaricom collects personal information such as your name, phone number, and location to deliver the service effectively. They promise to protect this data according to Kenyan law. If you’re registering a minor, a parent or legal guardian must manage the account.

9. Content rules
Videos downloaded or streamed via VybCall are Safaricom’s property or their licensor’s. Reproducing or distributing them without permission is a no-go. Also, if copyrights expire, Safaricom can remove content from the service at any time.

10. Limitations and disclaimers
VybCall works over the internet and is subject to network conditions. Safaricom isn’t responsible for technical glitches, system failures, or any misuse of your personal data by third parties.

Notably, Safaricom can update or amend the service and its terms at any time. Updates will be announced on their network, website, or in the press. Check their official site for the latest info and privacy updates.

Bottom line? Safaricom VybCall is a fun, tiny twist on waiting for your calls to connect. It’s cheap, easy to activate, and a neat way to show off your personality or your favourite local content. Just make sure your device is supported, you understand the charges, and you’re ready for your callers to get a visual treat.
