Safaricom has quietly rolled out an upgrade to its 5G Home Internet plans, improving the value of its entry-level option without raising prices. The base plan, previously capped at 10Mbps with a 250GB FUP, has now been upgraded to 15Mbps speeds and a higher 450GB Fair Usage Policy limit while retaining the same KES 3,000 per month pricing.
This update, reflected in Safaricom’s revised FAQ section, comes as welcome news for many home users who had found the older 250GB allocation and 10Mbps speeds a bit too limiting for today’s online needs, and especially for a 5G router.
Here’s how the updated Safaricom 5G Home Internet lineup now looks:
- 15Mbps @ KES 3,000 – FUP 450GB (previously 10Mbps / 250GB)
- 50Mbps @ KES 4,000 – FUP 1.5TB
- 100Mbps @ KES 5,000 – FUP 2TB
- 250Mbps @ KES 10,000 – FUP 4TB
The adjustments, while not officially announced through Safaricom’s social channels, appear to be a direct response to user feedback. In my review of the Safaricom Baicells 5G router, I had specifically voiced concerns that the 250GB FUP on the entry-level tier was too restrictive, especially as households increasingly depend on high-speed connections for work, streaming, and entertainment.
With the increased 450GB FUP and 15Mbps speeds, the plan now offers a bit more breathing room for families and individuals with moderate internet needs, including streaming in HD, online gaming, and remote work.
However, users with heavier data requirements will still find the 50Mbps @ KES 4,000 plan the better value. Its 1.5TB FUP limit continues to strike the right balance between performance and affordability, especially for those who stream 4K content or handle large downloads.
Even with these changes, there’s still a visible gap between the base and mid-tier plans. A mid-range option around KES 2,000 for 30Mbps with 750GB–1TB FUP could help Safaricom better compete with Airtel’s 15Mbps 5G Home plan at KES 2,000, which appeals to budget-conscious users. Furthermore, Safaricom still has a few more improvements it needs to make, especially on the ease of tracking usage as well as making payments via the My Safaricom app, among others.
Nonetheless, this update shows that Safaricom is listening, even if incrementally. The improved 15Mbps speed and 450GB FUP make the base 5G Home plan more practical and competitive, especially for light-to-moderate home internet users who previously felt short-changed by the older limits.
