Spotify adds an AI chatbot that lets Premium users talk to the app

Spotify is introducing a new AI-powered voice chatbot that lets eligible Premium subscribers have natural conversations with the music streaming service. Instead of tapping through menus, users can simply ask Spotify to play music, refine recommendations, manage playback, and learn more about what's currently playing.

Spotify is expanding its AI ambitions with the launch of a conversational voice assistant that allows users to talk directly to the app. The feature is rolling out to eligible Spotify Premium subscribers on mobile, making it easier to discover music and control playback using natural language.

The new AI experience is available from both the Home screen and the Now Playing view in the Spotify mobile app. Rather than relying on traditional search or playlists, users can describe exactly what they want to hear in everyday language.

For example, you can ask Spotify to:

  • “Play some artists I haven’t heard before.”
  • “Add some Bad Bunny.”
  • “Just his recent stuff.”
  • “Make it more upbeat.”

The AI understands follow-up requests, allowing conversations to flow naturally without repeating the original prompt. You can ask the Spotify AI chatbot things like “What is the inspiration behind Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism?” “When was this album released?” or “What genre is this?” This makes refining recommendations feel more like chatting with a music expert than navigating an app.

Beyond music discovery, the chatbot can also perform common actions. Users can ask it to save the current song, add tracks to the queue, or follow an artist without manually tapping through the interface. The AI can help listeners better understand the music they’re hearing and explore their own listening habits, giving users another way to interact with the platform beyond simply pressing play. For instance, you can ask the Spotify AI chatbot things like “When did I first listen to this song?” or “What genres have I been into recently?”

It can also answer questions while you’re listening to podcasts or audiobooks, helping you learn more about the creators, guests, and topics being discussed. Users can ask questions such as, “What other books has this author written?” or “What other podcasts has this guest appeared on?”

Another step in Spotify’s AI strategy

The chatbot builds on Spotify’s broader push into artificial intelligence. Over the past two years, the company has introduced AI DJ, AI-generated playlists, and other recommendation features designed to make music discovery more personal.

Spotify AI DJ Feature Expands to Kenyan Premium Subscribers

Unlike AI Playlist, which focuses on creating playlists from text prompts, the new chatbot acts as an always-available assistant capable of handling multiple tasks during a listening session. It combines music discovery, playback controls, and library management into a conversational interface.

The feature also reflects a wider industry trend, with companies increasingly embedding AI assistants directly into their apps rather than requiring users to switch to standalone chatbot services.

Limited rollout for now

At launch, the conversational AI is only available to eligible Spotify Premium users on iOS and Android in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden, and currently supports English only. Spotify has not announced when the feature will expand to more countries or whether it will eventually become available to free users.

For now, users in Kenya and most other markets will have to wait for Spotify to broaden the rollout. As with many of the company’s AI-powered features, Spotify is taking a gradual approach before making it available globally. If the rollout follows the pattern of previous Spotify AI features, broader availability could come in phases over the coming months, although the company has not shared a timeline.
