Free Perplexity Pro Worth $200? Airtel Is Giving It Away for 12 Months, But Not to You

-Ad-

12 months of free Perplexity Pro with Airtel is the kind of headline that makes you click with excitement… only to realize it’s not for you. Because if you’re reading this on Techish, chances are you’re Kenyan or somewhere else in Africa. Maybe a few of you are tuning in from the diaspora or other corners of the world (hi!), but this article, like most of our content, is made for the African reader. Which makes writing this feel a bit like handing out party invites… to a party you’re not invited to.

Because Airtel is doing something really cool, but only in India.

Airtel India Is Giving Away Free Perplexity Pro AI

Airtel India has partnered with Perplexity AI to offer its users a full 12-month subscription of free Perplexity Pro. That’s a $200 (₹17,000) value just sitting in the Airtel Thanks app (the country’s version of our very own My Airtel app), waiting to be claimed under “Rewards” or “OTT Benefits” by prepaid, postpaid, or broadband users in India.

And this isn’t just some basic AI chatbot. This is Perplexity Pro, the upgraded version of one of the smartest AI search tools I’ve used. You get:

-Ad- Infinix HOT 60i!
  • 300 pro searches per day
  • Access to advanced AI models like GPT-4.1, Gemini, Claude, and more
  • File upload and analysis tools
  • Visual generation with DALL·E and Flux
  • And yes, all the perks for free, for a whole year

Why Am I Jealous?

Because I’ve been using the free version of Perplexity AI for a few weeks now, and let me just say it’s impressive. It’s basically a search engine and research assistant rolled into one. Unlike Google, it doesn’t just throw links at you; it gives real-time answers with direct citations, saving you hours of digging through web pages.

Some of my key takeaways from using the free version of Perplexity AI:

  • It excels in academic and technical research, especially when summarizing research papers.
  • The mobile app is just as powerful as the desktop version, making it great for work on the go.
  • Even complex queries are handled well though sometimes you have to phrase things just right to avoid an information overload.
  • The platform also offers end-to-end encryption and private browsing, which is a bonus for sensitive research.

But the Pro version, which includes GPT-4 integration, file uploads, and enhanced power, costs $20/month. That adds up quickly. So seeing Airtel India users get free Perplexity Pro? Yeah… it stings a little.

But Why Not Us?

Here’s the thing: Airtel is an Indian company. India is its home turf and its largest market. It makes perfect sense that strategic partnerships and premium giveaways start there. That’s where the numbers and the business are. In fact, many of Airtel’s most advanced features start in India:

  • The AI-powered SMS spam alerts system, which eventually rolled out in Kenya (read more)
  • The groundbreaking Starlink partnership was first revealed in India before it was extended to Africa (full story here)
  • The website blocking tool for harmful content, still exclusive to India for now (here’s the article)

So yes, it makes sense but that doesn’t make it any less painful. Especially because Airtel is rapidly growing in Africa, recently surpassing Safaricom in subscriber growth pushing the total to 24 million users while boasting over 166 million subscribers and over 73.4 million data users across the continent. That’s a serious user base that’s ripe for tech-forward offers like this one.

So, Why Share This News If It’s Not for Us?

Simple: Because it matters. Because free Perplexity Pro is the kind of digital deal we deserve too. Because we should know what’s possible and what we can (hopefully) push for. Airtel has been doing a lot right, including things like the more affordable Smarta weekly bundles or expanding 4G/5G coverage, but it would be amazing to see this kind of AI-driven partnership reach our shores.

Maybe it will. Eventually.

Until then, I’ll keep refreshing Perplexity on my phone, squeezing out as much value as I can from the free version, and dreaming about what it might feel like to get free Perplexity Pro, be it from Airtel or not.
