Xiaomi’s Redmi 7A official in India

The Redmi 7A goes on sale in India from July 11th starting at Rs. 5,999 for the 2/16GB model and Rs. 6,199 for the 2/32GB model. Which translates to just about Ksh. 8,999, and Ksh. 9,300 respectively.

The 7A is a follow up to one of my favourite devices from last year: the Xiaomi Redmi 6A. It topped my best under 10k devices in Kenya, and is still an easy device for me to recommend right now given the 32GB model can now be bought for around Ksh. 9000.

The Redmi 7A has a 5.45 inch screen like its predecessor. Like before, there’s no notch, and the aspect ratio is 18:9. The bezels are still there, but they are slightly reduced giving this year’s device a 74% screen-to-body ratio compared to last year’s 72%. There’s no a Redmi Logo at the front on the bottom chin bezel. The top bezel has the 5MP selfie camera, a proximity sensor and an earpiece. There’s no front flash.

The biggest upgrades this year are:

  • the new Sony IMX486 12MP camera, and the
  • new Snapdragon 439 because last year’s model used the MTK Helio A22.

Something important to note is that the new 12MP Sony sensor is only available in the India models. I hope the India model becomes the global model, and that this is what we’ll get in Kenya. (The China model has a 13MP sensor).

I’m hoping Xiaomi Kenya will be quick enough to bring the Redmi 7A to Kenya, because I’m already sure it’ll be a great phone. Don’t dare overprice it. But given India’s pricing, this phone could cost just Ksh. 8,900 for the 16GB model, and Ksh. 9,999 for the 32GB model.
