AliExpress among new 40+ apps banned in India

Some months ago, India announced the ban of a couple of Chinese apps in a move the government claimed was meant to protect India’s sovereignty and integrity including users’ personal data. The original ban affected mainstream applications like TikTok, WeChat, and PUBG. You can check out the full list here of all the apps the Indian government banned then.

Well, it seems that’s not the end. As the standoff between the two countries continue to sort of escalate, the Indian government has announced a new round of apps that will not allowed to operate in the country. And this time the big ban falls on AliExpress – one of the biggest shopping platforms from the East.

“This action was taken based on the inputs regarding these apps for engaging in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, security of state and public order,” a statement from India’s IT Ministry said. Many tech analysts have pointed out that this is a double-standard statement given there are very many apps in the country collecting user data which haven’t been banned.
