Safaricom launches M-PESA in Ethiopia, offering mobile financial services after securing regulatory approval from National Bank.

Safaricom has announced a scheduled system maintenance that will affect its popular mobile money platform, M-PESA. This maintenance is set to take place on the night of Sunday, August 11th, 2024, from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM on Monday, August 12th, 2024.

What to Expect During the Maintenance

During this period, access to several critical M-PESA services will be intermittent. These include:

  • Lipa na M-PESA Paybill and Buy Goods services: Users will experience disruptions when trying to make payments to businesses and utilities.
  • International Money Transfers (Western Union): Transactions involving cross-border remittances via Western Union will be affected.
  • M-PESA Global: Services enabling international transactions and payments will be unavailable.
  • M-PESA and mySafaricom Apps: Both apps will have limited functionality, affecting users’ ability to conduct transactions or check balances.

Safaricom assures its customers that all other services, including calls, data, SMS, and other M-PESA-related services, will remain available during the maintenance window.

This scheduled maintenance is part of Safaricom’s ongoing efforts to innovate and enhance its service offerings. By conducting this maintenance during the late-night hours, Safaricom aims to minimise inconvenience to its customers.

Apology and Customer Assurance

In their announcement, Safaricom expressed regret for any inconvenience this maintenance might cause and thanked their customers for their understanding. The company emphasised that such measures are necessary to ensure that they continue to provide best-in-class services.

Customers using M-PESA services, particularly those who rely on Lipa na M-PESA, international money transfers, or the M-PESA apps, should plan accordingly to avoid disruptions during the maintenance period. Safaricom encourages users to complete any urgent transactions before the scheduled maintenance begins.
