WhatsApp is making it easier to chat across languages with the rollout of message translations on both Android and iPhone. The feature, announced on September 23, 2025, aims to break down language barriers for its more than 3 billion users across 180+ countries.
With message translations, users can now simply long-press on any message in a different language and tap “Translate”. You’ll then be able to select the language you want the text translated from or to, and even download it for future offline use. The feature works across 1:1 chats, groups, and even WhatsApp Channels.
For Android users, there’s an added perk: you can enable automatic translations for an entire chat thread, ensuring all future incoming messages in that conversation are instantly translated.
Importantly, WhatsApp says translations are processed on-device, meaning your privacy stays protected since the company cannot see the contents of your chats.
The rollout is gradual, starting with a limited number of languages:
- Android: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.
- iPhone: Over 19 languages right from launch.
This update builds on WhatsApp’s continued push to improve global communication. By making conversations seamless across different languages, the platform hopes users can connect more deeply with friends, family, and communities worldwide.
