Instagram preps AI-powered transitions in Stories, voice filters for DMs, & QR code login for tablets

Meta’s relentless push to integrate artificial intelligence into every corner of its ecosystem isn’t slowing down. Following a slew of updates to WhatsApp and Facebook, Instagram appears to be the next major beneficiary of new creative and utility features.

According to findings by reliable reverse engineer and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is currently developing three distinct features: AI transitions for photos in Stories, AI voice filters for DMs, and a long-awaited QR code login flow for tablets.

Here is a closer look at what is coming.

AI transitions for Instagram Stories

For creators who find the jump between two static images in a Story too abrupt, Instagram is working on a native solution.

As seen in the leaked interface, a new editing option labeled “AI Transition” sits alongside the standard “Separate” mode. While the “Separate” mode likely keeps photos as distinct slides (the current behaviour), the AI Transition feature appears to use generative AI to fill the gaps between images.

Based on the visual cues in the leak, this could work similarly to “frame interpolation,” where the AI generates new pixels to morph one photo into the next, creating a smooth, video-like flow between static shots. This would allow users to create more dynamic Stories without needing third-party editing apps like CapCut.

AI voice filters for DMs

Voice notes have become a dominant way to communicate on WhatsApp and Instagram, especially in markets like Kenya. Now, Instagram is looking to make them more customizable.

The leaked UI shows a new “AI voice filters” button located directly within the audio recording interface. While the screenshot shows an “Original” state, the presence of the filter icon implies users will be able to alter their voice before hitting send.

This could range from fun, novelty effects (like sounding like a robot or chipmunk) to more practical “studio” enhancements that clean up background noise—a feature already popular in other audio-centric apps.

QR code login for tablets

Perhaps the most useful “quality of life” update found is a new login flow specifically for tablets.

Historically, logging into Instagram on an iPad or Android tablet has been a friction-heavy process, often requiring 2FA codes or password typing. The new leak reveals a “Scan this QR code to login” screen, mirroring the incredibly popular WhatsApp Web and Telegram login methods.

Users would simply need to:

  1. Open Instagram on their tablet.
  2. Open Instagram on their primary phone.
  3. Scan the QR code displayed on the tablet to instantly authenticate.

When will these launch?

As with most features unearthed by Alessandro Paluzzi, these are currently in development. Meta has not officially announced release dates. However, given the polished look of the UI in these leaks, we expect them to roll out to beta testers in the coming months.

What do you think? Would you use AI to blend your photos in Instagram Stories, or is the QR code login for tablets the real winner here? Let us know in the comments.
