MacBook Neo price in Kenya drops to KES 90,000

Just three months after launching at KES 130,000, the MacBook Neo is now available for as low as KES 90,000 in Kenya.

When the MacBook Neo launched in Kenya at KES 130,000, I said the pricing made it a hard sell for most buyers. That was especially true after looking at the better-value options in my earlier roundup of MacBook Neo alternatives in Kenya. Even though the laptop was always going to be a problem for Chromebook and a chunk of Windows machines, as I noted in my piece on why Windows OEMs should be worried, the Kenyan launch price pushed it out of reach for many potential shoppers.

That is starting to change. And I feel vindicated. ICYMI, this was my parting shot when the MacBook Neo launched in Kenya:

My verdict? Spend that money elsewhere, because there are better alternatives. Otherwise, stick with your current setup for another three or so months. Let the initial stock rush clear, let the official channels open up, and watch that KES 130,000 price tag melt away.

Now, I recently spotted a brand new MacBook Neo at Kype Computers, where the 256GB model is currently going for KES 90,000, while the 512GB version costs KES 105,000. Less than a month ago, the same retailer was listing the same units at KES 97,000 and KES 111,000, respectively. So, if you wait for a couple more months, the price could be much lower.

I checked a few other retailers, and none of them is currently undercutting Kype Computers on the MacBook Neo. That makes this one of the better deals available right now for anyone who has been eyeing the machine but could not justify the original price tag. If there’s a better deal out there, drop their name in the comments.

At KES 90,000, the MacBook Neo is getting much closer to the territory where it begins to make sense as a serious buy, especially for users who want a solid laptop and a gateway into the Apple ecosystem without paying the earlier premium. It is still not the sub-KES 80,000 sweet spot I think would make it an obvious recommendation, but this is a far better place to start.

Kype Computers can be reached at info@kypecomputers.com or on +254707311340 and +254789026697. If you have been waiting for the MacBook Neo to become a smarter purchase, this is the first time the numbers have looked genuinely interesting.
