All M-Pesa Transaction Costs including PayBill Charges (2024 Update)

This is the full list of all M-Pesa Charges. Do note that, following a directive of the Central Bank of Kenya, you can now only send money to registered mobile money users. So say you have M-Pesa, previously you could send to any number – whether they were registered to a mobile money service or not. Now, they must be registered to say Airtel, TKash or M-Pesa to be able to receive money. This means, you don’t now have the “Send To Other Networks” option that used to be on M-Pesa Apps. Now, it is just “Send Money”, and the costs are the same.

Below you will also find transaction charges when paying via Paybill numbers, and when withdrawing from Agent or ATM. Last year, the wallet maximum was updated to KES 250,000 meaning you can now hold way more money on your M-Pesa than before.

Here’s an updated list of all M-Pesa transactions in 2024.

If a business is on Mgao tariff, a customer will pay a little less of the total charge with the business incurring the other bit. If a business is on the other tariffs, they will choose to either absorb the full transaction cost, or pass it all to the customer. Most businesses pass the cost to customer, and so the above charges will apply to the customer.

M-Pesa to Till Numbers

All M-Pesa to Till Number transactions are free for the customer. Except for Till Numbers at Petrol Stations (as stated by Safaricom). It is not clear how charges on Till Numbers vary per petrol station. For business owners using Till Numbers, there are charges that apply to using Till Numbers. These are:

  1. 0.55% per transaction, capped at KES 200.
  2. Transactions below KES 200 on Till Numbers attract no charges on businesses.
  3. Existing M-Pesa Transaction charges above apply when moving cash from Till Number to wherever.
