Update (July 14, 2025): Grok Translate has now replaced Google Translate in the X mobile app as well.
Original article follows:
In a quiet but eye-catching update, X (formerly Twitter) has officially ditched Google Translate in favor of Grok, Elon Muskβs in-house AI chatbot, for translating foreign language posts β at least on the web version. Grok, the snarky and sometimes spicy AI that’s been making headlines under Muskβs xAI initiative, is now doing double duty as your language buddy on X.
Just under the text where weβd usually see βTranslated by Google,β it now reads: βTranslated by Grokβ, with a handy link inviting you to βShow original.β Interestingly, this wasn’t among the many features that X users requested the company to bring to Grok earlier this month. But hey, we ain’t complaining.

While the shift might seem subtle, itβs another major marker in Muskβs ongoing mission to weave Grok into every corner of the X ecosystem. From answering questions to translating tweets, Grok is slowly positioning itself as the all-in-one brain for the app once known for 280-character thoughts and flying memes. This move also comes on the heels of XChat, Elon Muskβs Facebook Messenger clone.
The real question is: Will Grok handle nuanced translations as smoothly as Google Translate did? Or will it inject a bit too much… personality into what was supposed to be a simple football chant, for instance?
For now, it seems Musk is betting on homegrown AI to power more of Xβs everyday features. Whether that translates (pun intended) to a better experience remains to be seen. But if you’re a regular on Xβs global side of the timeline, be prepared β your translations just got a bit more Grok’d.
