
For years, the unwritten rule among creators has been simple. If you want your Instagram videos to look sharp, shoot them on an iPhone. Android phones, even flagship ones with cameras that beat iPhones in standalone reviews, have consistently produced softer, duller and more compressed clips inside the Instagram app. Google says that ends with Android 17.
At The Android Show I/O Edition on Monday, 12 May 2026, Google announced a new partnership with Meta to overhaul how Instagram captures, processes and uploads content from Android phones. The headline claim is bold. Video shot and uploaded through Instagram on flagship Android phones now scores “the same or better” than what Google calls “the leading competitor”. Google does not name iPhone in the announcement.
What is actually changing inside the Instagram app
Three things move from the stock Android camera into the Instagram in-app camera on flagship phones.
Ultra HDR capture and playback brings the same high dynamic range image format that Pixel phones use directly into Instagram. This means richer colours, brighter highlights and more detail in shadows when you shoot, post and view content in-app.
Built-in video stabilisation lets Instagram tap into the phone’s hardware-level stabilisation, so handheld walking shots stop looking shaky.
Night Sight integration brings Google’s well-regarded low-light processing directly into Instagram’s in-app camera on flagship phones. The press materials initially described this as “Night mode”, but the actual feature name is Night Sight, which is Google’s branding for its multi-frame low-light photography pipeline used on Pixel phones. Night Sight has been available to some third-party apps via Pixel Camera Services since 2023, but this is the first time it has been wired into Instagram specifically through Android’s deeper camera APIs.
Google also says it has “completely optimised the capture-to-upload pipeline” so that photos and videos stay sharp after you hit post. This is the part that matters most for Kenyan creators. Instagram has long been criticised for aggressively compressing uploads from Android devices, and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri confirmed last year that the platform intentionally lowers video quality on low-engagement clips.
The iPhone comparison comes with a big asterisk
Google’s “same or better than the leading competitor” claim is based on tests using its own Universal Video Quality (UVQ) model, an AI framework originally built by Google Research to measure how YouTube viewers perceive video quality. In other words, Google is the one running the benchmark, and the benchmark is Google’s own.
That does not mean the claim is wrong. It means it should be verified by independent testers before anyone treats it as settled. Side-by-side reviews from publications like MKBHD, GSMArena and DxOMark are likely to follow in the coming months once Android 17 ships to flagship phones.
This is part of a bigger pattern, but it is not really new
Samsung struck a similar deal with Meta and Snap for the Galaxy S24 in early 2024, bringing Super HDR, Nightography and stabilisation into Instagram and Snapchat in-app cameras. So this is not the first time an Android maker has gone directly to Meta to fix the same problem. What is different here is scope. Google is not negotiating for one phone brand. It is wiring these capabilities into Android 17 itself, which means any flagship that ships with the new OS can benefit, not just Pixels.
We have already explained the deeper platform changes coming in Android 17, including new camera APIs that let apps switch between photo and video modes without tearing down the camera session, and Constant Quality video encoding. Both of those changes are the technical scaffolding that makes the Instagram upgrade possible.
Who actually gets these features
Two important caveats. First, Ultra HDR and the full integration are limited to flagship Android phones. If you are running a sub-KES 100,000 phone, you will not see most of these benefits. Second, the rollout is staged through 2026.
There’s also stuff like Screen Reactions, a separate new feature that records your face and screen together for reaction videos, lands on Pixel devices first this summer before reaching other Android phones.
Instagram’s Edits app also gains two Android-exclusive AI tools. Smart Enhance upscales photos and videos with one tap. Sound Separation isolates audio layers like wind, music and speech so you can boost or remove them individually without re-shooting.
What to watch for
For Kenyan creators who have stuck with Android because of price-to-performance, this is a real improvement on paper. The practical takeaway is that if you are buying a flagship in 2026, the Instagram quality gap that pushed many creators to iPhone may finally be closing. The thing to watch is whether independent testers confirm Google’s claim, and whether mid-range Android phones, where most Kenyans actually live, eventually get any of these capabilities.
