OnStream & other free streaming apps gone dark? Here’s where to find the best alternatives

OnStream was the go-to app for watching movies and TV shows for free. But with the app now refusing to load, users are scrambling for alternatives. Fortunately, there's a community-maintained website that not only points you to working replacements but also thousands of other free apps, tools and online resourcesβ€”all in one place.

If you’ve tried opening OnStream over the past few days, you’ve probably encountered the same frustrating screen: “OnStream couldn’t load.” No home page. No trending movies. No TV shows. Just an error message pointing to a domain that no longer responds.

For those who relied on the app for free entertainment, it has come as an unpleasant surprise. Social media and Telegram channels are now full of people asking the same questions:

  • Is OnStream dead?
  • Is it coming back?
  • What’s the best OnStream alternative?

I’ve been seeing these questions more frequently myself, and after digging around, I found that OnStream isn’t the only casualty. Several free streaming apps and live TV sports services have quietly disappeared or become unreliable in recent months. Whether this is due to domain seizures, hosting issues, legal pressure, or developers simply abandoning projects, the result is the sameβ€”users are left searching for the next app.

The good news? There are still plenty of alternatives. Better yet, there’s one website that has become the internet’s biggest directory for finding them.

OnStream wasn’t on Google Play anyway

Unlike Netflix or DStv Stream, OnStream was never available through the Google Play Store. To install it, Android users had to download its APK manually and sideload it onto their phones, tablets, Android TV boxes or smart TVs. Now, even that has stopped working.

Launching the app simply displays an error saying:

OnStream couldn't load

For now, there has been no official explanation from the developers about why this is happening, but they promise to work on a fix.

If you’ve been following the free streaming scene, you’ll know this isn’t an isolated incident. Several live TV apps that many people used for football, Formula 1, UFC and other sports are also affected. That’s one of the biggest downsides of relying on unofficial streaming services. They can disappear overnight without warning.

The internet’s best-kept secret: FreeMediaHeckYeah (FMHY)

This is where I think many people are looking in the wrong place. Every time one streaming app disappears, people rush to Facebook groups, X, or Telegram hoping someone shares another APK. A much better approach is bookmarking FreeMediaHeckYeah, better known as FMHY.

Calling FMHY a website almost undersells what it is. It’s essentially the largest community-maintained directory of free internet resources, covering thousands of websites, apps, and tools. Instead of hosting movies itself, FMHY acts as an organized catalogue that points users towards available services. Movies are only one small section.

You’ll also find directories for:

  • TV shows
  • Live TV
  • Anime
  • Books
  • Music
  • PC software
  • Android apps
  • AI tools
  • Privacy software
  • Browser extensions
  • Open-source applications
  • Learning resources
  • Cloud storage
  • Developer tools
  • Cybersecurity utilities
  • Productivity apps

…and much more.

It’s one of those websites that becomes more useful the more time you spend exploring it.

The best part? It’s updated constantly

One reason FMHY has earned such a loyal following is that it isn’t a static website. Volunteers continually remove dead links, replace broken services, add newly discovered apps, reorganize categories, and even recommend better alternatives. So if today’s most popular streaming app disappears, chances are someone has already added two or three replacements.

If you want to stay ahead of new additions, it’s also worth keeping an eye on the FMHY Discord server and Reddit community, where contributors discuss newly added resources, broken links, and upcoming changes before they appear on the main website.

The best OnStream alternatives on FMHY? Well, I don’t want to pick anything for you. FMHY’s video section lists dozens of streaming platforms, be it web-based or standalone apps. Granted, how about going through them and picking what suits you, and then share the details in the comments?

You can start with Stremio, which is probably the closest thing to a modern streaming hub. Instead of hosting content itself, Stremio works with add-ons that aggregate movies and TV shows from different sources. Stremio is available for:

  • Android
  • Android TV
  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux

Kodi deserves a special mention because it isn’t a streaming app by itself. Instead, it’s an open-source media centre that can be extended with add-ons for movies, TV shows, live TV and local media playback. It is available almost everywhere.

Looking for free sports live streams?

FMHY also has a dedicated Live TV sports section covering services that aggregate live television and sports channels. However, this is another category where services frequently disappear, change domains, or become unavailable depending on legal action and regional restrictions.

That’s another reason I recommend using FMHY instead of relying on one bookmarked website. If one service vanishes, you’ll usually find several others listed in the same category.

It’s worth remembering that many of the services listed on FMHY, including streaming platforms, operate in legally grey areas or may provide access to copyrighted material without authorization. This article isn’t an endorsement of piracy or illegal streaming.

Rather, it’s meant to inform readers about why OnStream may no longer be working and where people are currently discovering alternatives. If you choose to use any unofficial streaming service, you should understand the legal implications in your jurisdiction and do so at your own risk.

One website worth bookmarking

If there’s one takeaway from OnStream’s sudden disappearance, it’s that don’t become dependent on a single app. Unofficial streaming services come and go all the time. Domains change. Developers disappear. Apps stop working.

FMHY has become the closest thing the internet has to a living directory of free online resources. Whether you’re looking for another movie app, a live sports service, an open-source productivity tool, or even a privacy-focused browser extension, chances are you’ll find it there or discover something even better.

And because it’s updated regularly by a large community of volunteers, it’s far more likely to point you towards working alternatives than a months-old Google search result.

So if OnStream has finally reached the end of the road, don’t spend hours hopping between suspicious APK websites. Bookmark FMHY instead. Even if you’re not looking for a movie app today, there’s a good chance it’ll save you time the next time your favourite free service disappears.
