Samsung One UI 9 stable is finally here

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event was understandably dominated by the new Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. They’re among the company’s most impressive foldables yet, and naturally stole much of the spotlight. For us in Kenya, however, the excitement is a little more measured especially after Samsung skipped the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 altogether. However, Samsung Mobile Kenya is showing hints that it will officially bring the new foldables to the local market.

But beyond the hardware announcements, Samsung quietly delivered what could be the biggest news for millions of existing Galaxy users: the stable version of One UI 9 based on Android 17 is officially here. The software ships out of the box on Samsung’s latest foldables, confirming that development of the stable release is complete. While existing Galaxy devices haven’t received it yet, this is the clearest indication yet that Samsung is preparing to begin its wider rollout.

Galaxy S26 users are next in line

The Galaxy S26 series has been participating in Samsung’s One UI 9 beta program for several weeks and is currently on One UI 9 Beta 4. Now that Samsung has finalized the software for its newest foldables, attention naturally shifts to the Galaxy S26 lineup. The stable update could begin rolling out soon, but history suggests users may still have a bit more waiting to do.

Last year offers a useful comparison. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 debuted with the stable version of One UI 8 on July 25, 2025, but Galaxy S25 owners didn’t receive the stable update until around mid-September. During that period, Samsung continued refining the software through a total of seven beta releases before deciding it was ready for the Galaxy S25 series.

The Galaxy S26 is only on Beta 4, meaning there’s still a possibility Samsung could release additional beta builds before rolling out the final version. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but one thing is now certain: a stable One UI 9 build already exists.

One UI 9 brings several meaningful improvements

Samsung hasn’t published a complete changelog comparing One UI 9 with One UI 8, but it has highlighted several notable additions that debut on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series and Galaxy Z Flip 8.

One of the biggest changes is the new AI Assistant Activity dashboard, which gives users a centralized view of AI-powered automations happening across the device. From one screen, users can review what AI agents have been doing and jump directly into the relevant assistant to manage settings or view additional context.

Privacy also receives extra attention. The new Privacy Alerts system proactively warns users whenever apps make potentially unnecessary background permission requests, helping identify suspicious behavior before it becomes a larger privacy concern.

Samsung has also revamped Smart Switch. For users moving from an iPhone running iOS 26.6 or later, setup becomes much easier. Instead of installing additional apps, users simply scan a QR code to wirelessly transfer their data. Smart Switch can now migrate significantly more information than before, including passwords and passkeys, call history, accessibility settings, eSIM data, and other supported device information. This should make switching from iPhone to Galaxy considerably less frustrating.

Another welcome addition is the new Warranty and Care hub inside Settings, which consolidates warranty information, diagnostics, repair requests, and device care tools into a single location.

What happens next?

With the stable One UI 9 version now shipping on Samsung’s newest foldables, the next major milestone will be the public rollout to existing Galaxy devices, starting with the Galaxy S26 series. After that, Samsung is also expected to expand the One UI 9 beta program to more eligible devices. That should include the Galaxy S25 series as well as last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, allowing more users to test Android 17 before their stable releases arrive.

For now, Samsung hasn’t shared a timeline for the Galaxy S26 stable rollout. But if previous years are anything to go by, users shouldn’t be surprised if a few more beta updates arrive before the final build lands.
