Kenya Power token purchases down after nationwide outage

If you’ve been trying to buy Kenya Power prepaid tokens this morning without success, you’re not alone.

Following last night’s widespread power outage that affected large parts of the country, many customers are reporting they cannot purchase electricity tokens through various payment channels. Complaints have been circulating across social media for hours, with users reporting their token purchases are failing or not going through at all.

Both Kenya Power and Safaricom have since acknowledged the problem, confirming that there is an ongoing issue affecting token purchases.

Responding to one customer on X just a few minutes ago, Safaricom said:

“There’s a system issue affecting token purchase and resolution is currently ongoing. Apologies for the inconvenience.”

Earlier this morning, Kenya Power also confirmed that its prepaid token vending platform is experiencing technical difficulties. In a response shared with another customer, the utility said:

“We are currently experiencing a technical hitch with our token vending system, and our team is actively working to resolve it. Please try purchasing again shortly. Thank you for your patience.”

At the time of writing, Kenya Power hasn’t explained what caused the outage affecting token purchases. While the issue comes just hours after electricity was restored following last night’s nationwide power disruption, there is no official confirmation that the two incidents are related.

There’s also no estimated timeline for when token purchases will be fully restored.

For now, customers who are unable to buy prepaid electricity tokens will have to wait as engineers work to resolve the technical hitch. If you’ve been receiving errors while attempting to purchase tokens, the problem appears to be on the service provider’s side rather than with your payment method or account.
