DStv Stream app disappears from some Android TVs, flagged as ‘unsupported’

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup only a week away, a disastrous DStv Stream app update has left some Android TV users staring at blank screens, uncertified errors, and a vanishing Play Store app.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is practically on our doorstep, and the excitement is palpable. Over at MultiChoice, now owned by France’s Canal+, they’ve been doing everything right to get fans hooked, opening up the tournament to every single DStv tier and tossing out some seriously enticing free bouquet upgrades for June.

But while many are setting up their living rooms for kickoff, a dark cloud is gathering over a massive group of streaming subscribers. If you rely on the DStv Stream app on an Android TV, you might be facing an unexpected, incredibly frustrating sitout.

A friend of the site recently reached out to me, completely locked out of his subscription. He’s using the DStv Stream app on a Skyworth smart TV running Android TV 11. Out of nowhere, the app stopped working following an update rolled out a couple of weeks ago. He sent over several screenshots of the errors, and they immediately paint a clear picture of what’s going wrong beneath the hood.

When my friend attempts to open the app, he is greeted by a stark “Unsupported device” warning window, as captured below. The message tells users to ensure they are using a Google-certified device and not a modified version of Android.

When he went to the Google Play Store to try a fresh install, the app had vanished entirely from search results. A direct query brought up the message seen in the screengrab below: “DStv Stream by MultiChoice Support Services (Pty) Ltd isn’t available on Google Play on this device.”

I wanted to see if his TV was an outdated anomaly. However, his system profile clearly shows a legitimate Skyworth model SWTV-20AE running a licensed version of Android TV OS 11. Going by how regularly Android TV OS receives updates (the latest is Android 14), this isn’t too old for TVs, although the security patch level is undoubtedly old.

Under the TV’s Google Play Store ‘About’ settings, the Play Protect certification status has suddenly toggled to “Device is not certified.” For some reason, a recent software handshake failure between Google, the TV manufacturers (like Skyworth), and DStv’s security updates has stripped these TVs off their official certification status in the eyes of the DStv app.

I dug deeper into the Google Play Store reviews page for the DStv Stream app to see if this was an isolated incident. It isn’t. A wave of identical complaints has flooded the store from April through May 2026. There are also reports on Reddit and Facebook, although most of them seem to originate from South Africa.

Users across different brands such as Skyworth, TCL and even TV boxes are experiencing the exact same loop of death.

People who have been streaming seamlessly for three years are suddenly being told their hardware is illegal or modified. Technicians are stumped, sideloading failed, and users who paid for premium tiers explicitly for the World Cup are left completely stranded.

What MultiChoice says vs. what’s happening

If you look up the official DStv FAQs page regarding why the app might suddenly stop working, the company offers a standard, rigid response:

"We regularly update security requirements on our app to comply with rights agreements we have with our content suppliers. This may impact devices which do not comply with these changes."

While it’s understandable that MultiChoice must strictly protect its broadcast rights, especially with billions of shillings on the line for the World Cup, blanket-banning legitimate, mid-tier household smart TVs due to a broken Play Protect certification loop is a massive misfire.

As of right now, the DStv team has not officially acknowledged this as a widespread bug or system error on their end. However, the Skyworth South Africa team is actively asking for direct feedback from affected users so they can track down the affected device profiles and follow up. Other countries may have to contact their local Skyworth support teams.

The emails to send to are support02@skyworth.co.za or reception02@skyworth.co.za.

If your TV is currently suffering from this blackout, we highly recommend taking screenshots of your TV’s “About” page and sending a detailed complaint directly to DStv’s digital support channels. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicking off in a week, let’s hope MultiChoice and Google iron out this digital handshake very fast. Otherwise, some fans might find themselves watching the biggest tournament on earth on the tiny screens of their smartphones.
