I still remember when the Galaxy S23 series and the Z Fold 5/Flip 5 dropped back in 2023. It feels like just yesterday we were unboxing them and marveling at the performance bumps. But as anyone who closely follows the smartphone world knows, software lifecycles move fast.
If you own one of these fantastic 2023 devices, I have some bittersweet news for you. While you are definitely in line for the highly anticipated Android 17 rollout, One UI 9.0 will likely be the final major OS update your device receives.
To understand where we are right now, we have to look back at how Samsung handled the previous update cycle. You might recall that the One UI 8.5 rollout deliberately excluded all Galaxy devices released in 2022. This meant that if you were holding onto a Galaxy S22, a Galaxy Z Fold 4, a Z Flip 4, Tab S8 series, or even the budget Galaxy A53 and A33, you were left out of the One UI 8.5 party.
Instead of receiving that feature-packed bump, users of those 2022 devices were placed on a quarterly security patch schedule based on One UI 8.0. It was a tough pill to swallow for some, but it firmly established Samsung’s cutoff strategy.

Now, the script is flipping to the 2023 lineup. Devices that successfully made the jump to One UI 8.5 will almost certainly receive the One UI 9.0 update based on Android 17. However, because they are reaching the end of their promised four-year major OS update lifecycle, this will be their swan song.

Samsung Galaxy devices waving goodbye with One UI 9.0
Based on Samsung’s update policies and our tracking, here is the list of devices where One UI 9.0 will be the final destination:
- Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S23 FE
- Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5
- Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, and Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
- Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE+
- Galaxy A34
- Galaxy A54
- Galaxy A24
- β¦and several other Galaxy devices released in 2023 based on Android 13 with a promise of 4 major OS upgrades.
If you don’t see your newer device on this list, don’t panic. If you’ve been keeping an eye on our Samsung One UI 9 (Android 17) update tracker, you already know that newer lineups have a much longer runway. For context, we recently dove into the details regarding the Samsung Galaxy S24 stable One UI 9 update timeline. We’ve also been answering questions about when the Galaxy S25 will get the stable One UI 9 update. Both of those newer generations will continue to enjoy major updates well into the future thanks to Samsung’s extended seven-year update promise that started with the Galaxy S24.
Meanwhile, the crown jewel of this year’s rollout will, of course, be the Galaxy S26 flagship series. Released just this past February, the S26 lineup will be the most recent Galaxy device receiving the One UI 9 update sometime in the coming weeks.
Should you rush out to upgrade your Galaxy S23 or A54 just because One UI 9.0 is the last major update? Not at all.
I always tell people that the end of major OS updates does not mean the end of your phone’s life. Even after Android 17 drops, Samsung will continue to push regular security patches to keep your 2023 devices safe from vulnerabilities for an additional year. Your phone will remain perfectly functional, fast, and secure. However, if you are the kind of user who always wants the newest AI features, UI tweaks, and core Android functionalities, late 2026 or early 2027 might be the perfect time to start eyeing that Galaxy S26, Galaxy S25 or whatever Samsung is cooking up next.
Are you currently using one of the devices on this list? Let us know in the comments if you plan to hold onto it after the One UI 9 update or if you’re already budgeting for an upgrade!
